What is Fentanyl?
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid used to treat severe pain, such as cancer, post-surgery, and people with chronic pain. It is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Illicitly manufactured fentanyl comes in liquid and powder form and is often mixed into other drugs, it is the leading cause of increased overdose deaths in the United States. Liquid or highly concentrated fentanyl can be absorbed rapidly into the skin and can be extremely toxic.
Who are at risk for occupational exposure?
All first responders (Law enforcement, Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) personnel are increasingly likely to encounter Fentanyl in their daily activities (for example: responding to overdose calls, conducting traffic stops, arrests, and searches).
Fentanyl resistant gloves
NIOSH recommends using Powder-free nitrile gloves with a
minimum thickness of 5 +/- 2 mil (i.e. 0.127 +/- 0.051millimeters; 1 mil=0.0254 millimeter), unless the manufacturer
provides performance breakthrough data for a thinner glove. Must be tested according to ASTM D6978 and tested
for use with chemotherapy drugs.
